The Constitution of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda specifically states the following in Article IX, Section 2, regarding Admission to Membership.
“Any man meeting the qualifications for initiation according to the procedures and definitions established in the Bylaws and Policies of The Fraternity and who does not hold any class of membership in another social collegiate fraternity may be initiated into membership in The Fraternity. No person shall be denied membership in The Fraternity based upon race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical impairment.”
As an organization, we understand that our knowledge of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is ever-evolving. Further, as an organization and as individual members, we are committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our Fraternity Ideals are things we strive to achieve but may never realize fully. Consistent with those guiding Ideals, it is the task of our Members to work at bettering our organization and the world around us.
Using this as a framework for the expectations of our Fraternity and expanding it beyond membership admission, the following policy regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has been adopted by the National Executive Council:
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Admission to membership into the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda is reserved for persons identifying their gender as male. Membership shall not be denied based upon race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical impairment.
Employment, volunteers, vendor engagement, and all other areas of business with the Fraternity at the local or national level will not be determined based on gender identity, race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation or physical condition.
The Fraternity’s Diversity Initiatives are applicable—but not limited—to our practices and policies on recruitment and selection; compensation and benefits for employees; professional development and training; promotions; social programs; layoffs; terminations; and the ongoing development of an environment built on the premise of diversity that encourages and enforces:
- Respectful communication and cooperation between all members, employees, volunteers, and vendors.
- Contributions to the communities we serve to promote a greater understanding and respect for diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Fraternity realizes that the understanding of diversity, racism, and discrimination are ever-evolving in the society in which we participate. As “Men of Character Committed to Making a Difference”, the Fraternity will continue to explore opportunities and update our processes in order to create the most inclusive environment possible for our members and friends.
The Fraternity Headquarters will maintain a reporting mechanism found on our national website for the reporting of any bias-related allegations/incidents. This website portal mechanism will send the report directly to a non-staff entity for the purposes of review and response.
